A massive rescue and relief operation is under way in southern India after severe flooding left about 250 people dead and millions without homes. More than 350 villages are still marooned after five days of heavy rain in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka states.
Rainfall has eased in the worst affected state of Karnataka but many farms have been destroyed.
The rains have come late. Only last week the government said India had been hit by the worst drought in 40 years.
Indian air force aircraft are being used to drop relief materials to the hundreds of thousands of villagers stranded by rising flood waters. Soldiers have been trying to reach those affected in boats.

Death toll rises to 250, relief efforts underway |
Assalamalaikum WRWBT
After the floods, the people of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are in a dire situation, still struggling to survive. According to BBC, the death tool is over 250, while other news sources (IANS) says that over 200,000 homes have collapsed and over 1,400 villages are still under the havoc caused by the rains. The government officials have setup 1,200 relief camps in 12 districts, providing shelter to over 350,000 people.
IMRC volunteers have been working tirelessly on the ground and have distribute over 2000 blankets and warm clothing. They have also distributed food to over 50,000 affected people. After a devastation like this the most important need is to provide people access to clean drinking water. IMRC volunteers are establishing water purification units. Another important need is to help people clean up their homes and rebuild their lives. IMRC volunteers are actively finding solutions and working with others to provide
Following are few excerpts from an update provided by our team on the ground (translated from urdu, apologize for any mistakes)
“Now we are in Guntur, here are few updates for your benefit. Things are very bad in Krishna and Guntur, the villages on the banks of the Krishna river that were under the water are now sinking further. Water has completely flooded Highway 9 in this areas, due to which we are finding difficulties in reaching people. We are working on providing relief, specially to people who are cut off from the reach of relief camps. We are using small boats to reach these people and provide them food and basic neccassities…
This relief work has to continue into rehabilitation, farmers here have lost their crops for the year, and a common farmer who has grwon cotton this year, has lost more than Rs. 75,000 worth of crops due to these floods. The help from the govt would not be more that 1 or 2% of the damage for these people, if we do not help these farmer on time, they may get into borrowing money on interest or may even start committing suicides.”
This immediate relief and then the following rehabilitation cannot happen without Allah SWT’s help and your support. Please make dua and please donate generously to imrc, you can make online donations at www.imrc.ws/donate
